Background:
I have been an electrical controls engineer in the power industry since 2006. I hold a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. I am also a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina and Virginia, and an active volunteer with the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
What do you do here at MD&A? What aspect do you enjoy most about your role?
As a Senior Controls Engineer, I create electrical and mechanical design and installation plans for turbine control and generator excitation systems. I also supervise equipment installation and commission the equipment afterward. The aspect I enjoy most about my role at MD&A is working in the field. I appreciate the hands-on work and collaborating with customers on-site.
What is the most interesting job/ challenge you have come across onsite?
I find troubleshooting hydraulic circuits both interesting and challenging. Several years ago, I worked on a project where we encountered a water hammer issue in hydraulic lines. This issue caused the hydraulic piping to shake violently when valves were modulated. I spent over a week testing to identify the root cause of the problem. Eventually, we discovered that a small spring on an actuator in the hydraulic circuit was worn out. After replacing it, the water hammer issue was resolved.
What leads to a successful Controls Outage?
A successful controls outage requires customer engagement throughout all phases of the project. Projects where customers are involved early always proceed more smoothly.
Why did you choose to work for MD&A and why have you continued to choose to work at MD&A?
I started working for MD&A in March 2012. I chose MD&A for the opportunity to learn about turbine and generator controls. Previously, I had worked in power plants on the steam generation side and lacked experience with turbine and generator controls. I have remained at MD&A because of the autonomy in my role and the company’s customer-focused culture. MD&A is a growing company with a small business feel, and our employees work hard to develop and maintain customer relationships.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I would want the ability to be in multiple places and do multiple things at the same time. Maybe then I could fit in everything I want to do.
