Jim Miller

Performance Engineer Outage Services Division

Background:

I began my career as a mechanic in the military and then earned my engineering degree. After college, I worked for a large electric utility for 11 years in various roles, including performance testing, planning, production assurance, and system and program engineering. I joined MD&A in 2013, which has allowed me to focus on performance testing and steam path audits.

What do you do here at MD&A? What aspect do you enjoy most about your role at MD&A?

I provide customers with services that identify and quantify performance losses, which helps customers improve decision making relative to repairs; Ultimately leading to reduced operating costs. Our group performs performance testing, thermodynamic modeling, performance analysis, and steam path audits. I enjoy helping customers improve efficiency and output, which can also decrease fuel consumption and emissions.

What is the most interesting performance challenge you have come across at a jobsite?

Performance testing a large, combined-cycle unit with load restrictions and equipment outages was particularly challenging. Additionally, we incorporated new wireless sensing technology into our testing program, which presented unique configuration challenges.

What can lead to a reduction in turbine performance & efficiency?

Turbine performance typically degrades over time due to various factors, such as blade surface deposition and internal seal degradation. Operating profiles and techniques can increase the potential for turbine damage and reduce performance. Cycle isolation is a key aspect of a testing program to ensure that the energy produced contributes to power production rather than bypassing the prime mover.

Why did you choose to work for MD&A and why have you continued to choose to work at MD&A? How would you describe our company culture?

MD&A has allowed me to focus on engineering topics that I enjoy and has given me the freedom to expand my knowledge base while helping to improve the services the company offers. The work performed by the performance group adds value and results in useful, actionable outcomes for our customers. Our company has many experienced, and specialized employees who take pride in their work. Our staff enjoys the work they do, and work hard to do the right thing for our customers.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am an avid fly fisherman and look for opportunities to fly fish in fresh and saltwater whenever I get the chance. Because I have the opportunity to travel with MD&A, I’ve been able to fish in some areas that I otherwise would never have known existed.
