{"id":62993,"date":"2018-01-19T08:59:59","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T13:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/?p=62993"},"modified":"2019-07-22T09:42:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T13:42:42","slug":"frame-5-gas-turbine-rotor-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/resources\/frame-5-gas-turbine-rotor-repair\/","title":{"rendered":"Frame 5 Gas Turbine Rotor Repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mechanical Dynamics &amp; Analysis (MD&amp;A) repaired a Frame 5 gas turbine rotor. \u00a0MD&amp;A replaced 1<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">st<\/span>\u00a0and 2nd stage buckets, repaired the seal area on the row 1 turbine wheel, performed compressor blade blending, and machined the thrust collar to accommodate the newer style thrust bearing at the No. 1 bearing.<\/p>\n<p>During their planned major inspection, the utility decided to remove the rotor based on prior recommendations from past borescope findings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62998 size-full\" title=\"gas turbine rotor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Turbine-edited-12-15-17.jpg\" alt=\"gas turbine rotor repair\" width=\"660\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Turbine-edited-12-15-17.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Turbine-edited-12-15-17-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Turbine-edited-12-15-17-213x160.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Turbine-edited-12-15-17-90x68.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon inspection, our gas turbine experts discovered that the Row 1 turbine wheel showed indications of heavy wear caused by rubbing to the rear face of the discourager seal. To repair this, the seal area was prepped and built up using a spray metallizing process.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62999 size-medium\" title=\"gas turbine rotor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Seal-area-before-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"gas turbine rotor repair\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Seal-area-before-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Seal-area-before-120x160.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Seal-area-before-68x90.jpg 68w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Seal-area-before.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the precise build-up was achieved, the seal area was ground to the correct dimensions and contours. In addition, wear damage to the Row 2 turbine disc sealing area was repaired to achieve an acceptable surface after a fluorescent penetrant inspection was completed.<\/p>\n<p>Experts also performed compressor blade blending from wear damage\/FOD to all compressor blade rows. One Row 16 blade was removed and replaced, and non-destructive testing was performed on the repaired rotor.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive balance work was completed on two turbine bucket stages. MD&amp;A experts replaced both stages of buckets. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our experts also performed the modification to the gas turbine rotor which involved machining the thrust runner face that is located at the No. 1 bearing. This is a common recommendation for the Frame 5 fleet to improve the reliability and operation of the thrust bearing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62997 size-medium\" title=\"gas turbine rotor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thurst-face-after-machining-edited-12-15-17-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"gas turbine rotor repair\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thurst-face-after-machining-edited-12-15-17-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thurst-face-after-machining-edited-12-15-17-213x160.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thurst-face-after-machining-edited-12-15-17-90x68.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Thurst-face-after-machining-edited-12-15-17.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Skilled technicians from MD&amp;A\u2019s Bearings, Seals, and Hydraulics Division re-toothed the rotor\u2019s oil deflectors and re-babbitted the bearings.<\/p>\n<p>New replacement buckets were provided by MD&amp;A Parts. The rotor was progressively low speed balanced as the 1st and 2nd stage buckets were installed, technicians secured balance weights and completed the six-point residual unbalance test.\u00a0 The rotor was then packaged &amp; secured on the shipping skid.\u00a0 Finally, MD&amp;A transported the rotor to site and successfully supervised the re-installation.<\/p>\n<p>MD&amp;A\u2019s specialized services range from Combustion, Hot Gas Path, and Major Inspections to Compressor &amp; Turbine Rotor Repairs and End of Life inspections.
