The unit was a 3600 rpm, 90 MW combined-cycle unit.\u00a0 MD&amp;A\u2019s Turbine-Generator Repair Facility performed the incoming inspections\/evaluations, repair straightening of the rotor, final inspections, as well as high-speed balance.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming inspections and evaluations consisted of blast cleaning, NDE, visual inspections, material verification, as well as a detailed runout check of the rotor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Chart2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Chart2.png\" alt=\"Chart2\" width=\"550\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Chart2.png 550w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Chart2-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Chart2-90x48.png 90w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rotor straightening involved an initial stress relief operation, as well as multiple iterations of thermal straightening, to correct the incoming rotor runout condition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS.jpg\" alt=\"5879-RS\" width=\"660\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS-245x160.jpg 245w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/5879-RS-90x58.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In support of the rotor straightening, machining modifications were made to the shaft N-3 packing gland area as well as the inboard thrust collar.\u00a0 The N-3 packing gland area on the rotor was machined to a smaller diameter and new packing rings were supplied and installed.\u00a0 The backside of the inboard thrust collar was modified to add a much-needed balance weight plane on the turbine end of the rotor.\u00a0 The thermal straightening process did not require machining of the rotor journals, re-sizing of the journal bearings, machining of the couplings, or line boring of the coupling holes on-site during reinstallation.\u00a0 After completion of all repairs, the High-Pressure rotor was balanced at operating speed and overspeed tested at 110%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB.jpg\" alt=\"4088-HSB\" width=\"660\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB-239x160.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.mdaturbines.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/4088-HSB-90x60.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The High-Pressure rotor was received with a bow of 0.040\u201d TIR (total indicator reading) in the N-3 packing area of the rotor. \u00a0This amount of runout would not allow the rotor to spin up through critical speeds, let alone get to rated speed without severe vibration. MD&amp;A successfully straightened the HP rotor to 0.003\u201d TIR using a thermal straightening process. \u00a0The HP rotor was balanced and overspeed tested without incident and returned to the site for reinstallation and startup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have us look at your bowed rotor today.
